What is Form 16?

Form 16 is a tax document you receive from your employer every year. It provides details of the taxes deducted from your salary throughout the financial year.

It certifies that, under section 203 of the IT Act, 1961, the Employer has deducted Tax at source from the Income chargeable under the head “Salaries”.


This form provides a breakdown of your income details and the tax deducted at source (TDS) by your employer. It has everything you need to accurately file your income tax return (ITR).


It is issued once a year, on or before the 15th of June for the preceding financial year in which tax was deducted,


It contains the complete information one needs to file their ITR.


The form is divided into two parts: Part A and Part B. 

Part A: Tax Information

Part A of Form 16 is the summary of the tax deducted by your employer. 

It contains the 

  • Name, address (as per income tax database), and PAN of the employee and 
  • TAN and PAN of the Employer, 
  • Details of Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) 
    • Amount deducted.
    • Date deposited.


Part B: Income and Deductions

  • Details of Salary Paid.
  • Income from Other Sources: This section will list any income you earned outside your salary, like interest earned or rental income.
  • Deductions under Chapter VI-A (Section 124): This section will detail any tax exemptions you claimed under Chapter VI-A of the Income Tax Act, which includes deductions for various investments, expenses, and contributions.
  • Net Income Tax Payable

If anyone has not received their Form 16, they can use the worksheet that the ITD provides to calculate and declare the amount.

Anyone who has worked with more than one employer will receive Form 16 from each employer.
